Every year I like to look back on my predictions for the previous year and then put together a predictions list for the new year. How well did my predictions for 2022 pan out? Overall, most of them were on point (you can see a checklist of my old 2022 predictions at the beginning of my recent blog).
For 2023, I decided to focus mostly on cybersecurity. And several things stand out.
1. AI-Powered Attacks Are Going to Get Worse
Generative AI has enabled a new class of software capable of producing text, images, and code. On the code front, ChatGPT has already shown great promise in generating exploits for vulnerabilities, which is very worrisome.
2. Data Breach Penalties Will Skyrocket
Only a few days into the new year and the Irish Data Protection Commission has already fined Meta an additional $400 million for how they mishandled user data.
And it isn’t just the name-brand companies, either. Most of the headlines concentrate on fines levied against companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon, but there have been over 1,200 fines so far and most of them hit less well-known companies, including small tech companies, hospitals, banks, restaurants, and even private individuals.
Those are my top two predictions. Read the blog for more about post-quantum, digital attacks on energy supply, and data sovereignty.
How To Be Crypto-Agile Before Quantum Computing Upends The World
It’s possible that powerful quantum computers already exist in a highly classified lab. It’s equally possible that it will be another 40 years before quantum computers can crack modern cryptography. Most experts think it will happen sometime in the next 10 years.
Regardless, change is coming. There’s a race to create new cryptographic algorithms that can withstand attacks from both classic and quantum computers, and in the next 10 years, best practices in cryptography will evolve significantly and quicker than they have over the previous 25. Companies need to take a crypto-agile approach now to avoid huge, disruptive, urgent, Y2K-level security projects later.
I'm excited about the new year, and I hope you are, too. I see a lot of opportunities in 2023 for improvements in data security and data privacy practices around the world. Improving the baseline protection of data has been our mission since we started IronCore Labs almost 8 years ago.
I hope you continue to follow along as we enter the new year.
