Architecting Privacy hero image with a key hanging from a peg

Greetings,

Most of the time, when I talk about security and privacy, I aim my views at the businesses that hold and collect massive amounts of data -- the big tech companies, the SaaS companies, and so forth. Coincidentally, that's who we sell our software to, as well.

But as someone who is very tuned in to security and privacy issues, I do a lot to protect myself, and I often get asked by friends, family, and acquaintances what they should be doing.

At one time, the answers were highly dependent on the individual asking, but I've noticed lately that my answers have grown consistent between technical and non-technical folks. So, I embarked on capturing my updated recommendations into a new blog series this holiday season.

We currently envision seven parts, and the first three are already written:

Part 1: Identity Theft Protection Checklist
Part 2: Private Communications for Email and Text Messages
Part 3: Privacy Guide to Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT

I hope the series is helpful to you and is something you may want to share with friends and family.  Now's the time of year to make these changes.

And on that note, best wishes for a happy holiday season and a wonderful 2025.

Privacy Guide to Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT

Apple’s OpenAI ChatGPT Integration Falls Short of Privacy Expectations

This one wasn't part of the original series plan, but with the recent release of iOS 18.2, a dedicated warning is necessary: Apple Intelligence is private, but only if you disable ChatGPT.  The ChatGPT integration brings a mess of choices that undermine privacy with no perfect settings to protect yourself.
